A map of NYC with my favorite food spots, things to do, and photo locations. I'll try my best to keep the list up to date :)

There's a joke: when aliens invade Earth, just give them Manhattan — it preserves the humanity of all kinds.

Transportation 交通

Let's talk about airports first. There are three airports in NYC:

Newark is technically in New Jersey, but it's still one of the main airports serving the NYC area. There are other smaller airports like Teterboro, but they are mostly for private jets and not commonly used by travelers. Most international flights arrrive either at JFK or EWR, while LGA is mostly for domestic flights.

If you're flying into JFK, and taking public transportation to the city, the first step is to take the Airtrain, a light rail system that connects the airport to the subway and commuter train systems, from the terminals to Jamaica. Airtrain is $8.50 per ride, accepts contactless payment. From Jamaica, you can take either the metro/subway or the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to get to Manhattan. Subway ticket is now $3 per ride (2026), and all stations support contactless payment. LIRR on the other hand requires a mobile ticket, which can be purchased through the MTA app. Important NOTE: starting in 2026, there is $8 penalty if not activating the mobile ticket prior to boarding. The way to bypass that is to purchase a later ticket and activate it on an earlier train that you took.

NYC subway system is one of the largest and busiest in the world, and it's a convenient way to get around the city. The subway operates 24/7, and there are multiple lines that cover all five boroughs. You can use the MTA app for real-time updates, however, cell services only exist in the stations, and there are pretty much no service while en route, so I tend to use the NYC subway map app more often to manually check routes and transfers. One thing I do like about NYC subwa is that there are local and express trains. Pay attention to the while circle on the subway map as they indicate express train stops. A huge time saver if you are traveling long distance. subways in NYC are distringuished by letters or numbers, and they are color coded based on the line as well. For example, red line includes 1, 2, and 3 trains, green line includes 4, 5, and 6 trains, and blue line includes A, C, and E trains. The reason behind is they were operated by different companies before acquired and became public under MTA. One thing to note is that sometimes the different number/letter trains can run on the same tracks. At Times Square, 2/3 trains share the same track, NRW share the same track, and C/E train share the same track as they are express trains, so pay attention to the train you are taking and if it stops at the stop you are trying to get off at.

Sightseeing 观光

There are many great museums in NYC, some popular ones are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum. Some lesser known ones include the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Frick Collection. Really depending on what you are into, there is something for everyone. If you are more into outdoor activities, Central Park is a must-visit, and it's a great place to relax and enjoy nature in the middle of the city. For iconic landmarks, you can't miss the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Also I do not recomment going to the top of the Empire State Building, as you lose the view of the iconic building itself, and the view from other observation decks are much better. My personal ranking of the observation decks in NYC is as follows:

  1. Tied Summit One Vanderbilt and Top of the Rock. Both got great views of the city, TOR is slightly better in the sense that you get to see the city from a much better angle, and the observation deck is completely open air. The glass panels also have a gap in between, allowing photo lovers to take pictures without any glass obstructions in the middle. Summit on the other hand provides more of an immersive experience, you get see a few more things with about the same amoung of money. DO NOT spend the extra money on the elevator ride, it is just not worth it.
  2. Empire State Building. The view is OK, but there are many iron bars that obstruct the view.
  3. One World Observatory. The view is not bad, but the building location is downtown, very far from the midtown area, so the view might not be as good as the other three. One benefit though is it's much closer to the Statue of Liberty.
  4. The Edge. The shopping mall at the Edge is fun to explore, with the iconic vessel right next door. But the view from the observation deck in my opinion is too far on the edge of the island, and you don't really get to see a lot due to building obstructions. The Edge。

Hotels 住宿

I can't provide much guidance on hotels as I haven't really stayed in many in NYC. Cheap options are hostel, I know one that locates near 103rd st, the place I've stayed at before when I was an exchange student visiting NYC. Other hotesl can range from cheap to very expensive $$$$, depending on the location, the time of the year, and the quality of the hotel. Generally speaking, hotels in Manhattan are more expensive than those in other boroughs, but they are also more convenient for sightseeing and transportation. Anywhere near a main subway stattion is a good choice, preferably near a station that has express trains, so you can save time on transportation. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider staying in Brooklyn or Queens, where you can find more affordable hotels and still have easy access to Manhattan via subway. I do not recommend staying near Times Square, although it is a popular area with very convenient access to many subway lines, the facilities are often old, the roads are always croweded with tourists and very noisy.

Food

Use this area for restaurant tips, coffee shops, bars, desserts, reservation notes, or your own go-to NYC food list.
